Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy (Vampire Facial)
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is a popular skin rejuvenating treatment sometimes known as the “vampire facial,” which comes from the use of the patient’s own blood in the treatment.
This nonsurgical procedure has garnered a lot of media attention because of its popularity with movie stars and celebrities and its sensational nickname. But what is this procedure, and why is it so important to have it at a trusted medical facility like Kelsey-Seybold Clinic?
Microneedling and PRP Therapy
The first step in PRP Therapy is microneedling with the SkinPen instrument, also known as collagen induction therapy.
As the minimally invasive SkinPen device is gently glided across the face, it creates microscopic channels that minimize the signs of aging via stimulation of the skin’s own production of collagen and elasticity. This can improve tone, texture, and the appearance of scars and lead to overall rejuvenation of aging skin.
To reverse more significant signs of aging and for enhanced skin rejuvenation, PRP Therapy is done after a microneedling session, using a small sample of the patient’s own blood.
The “Vampire” Step
The application of platelet rich plasma (PRP) using the patient’s own blood is the “vampire facial” part of the procedure. PRP contains growth factors and bioactive proteins that work to further stimulate new cells and the production of collagen, which helps to beautify the skin.
In our clinical setting, board-certified Kelsey-Seybold cosmetic doctors are able to offer different application options for PRP Therapy. The plasmacan be injected into specific areas of the face, like the "tear trough" or the cheeks, for example. These injections are very small and similar to those used in Botox® injections and dermal filler treatments.
Alternatively, the plasma can be sprayed evenly across the face (like airbrushing) and it is absorbed into the skin. We’ll discuss the options and benefits of each with you and help you reach a decision that’s based on your specific objectives and particular areas of concern.
As we age, production of growth factors diminishes, leading to wrinkles, sagging, and thinner skin. Application of these valuable protein growth factors via PRP in conjunction with the microneedling procedure enables the skin to look more youthful, smooth, and plump.
How Is the Platelet Rich Plasma Obtained?
In our office, about an ounce of the patient’s own blood is drawn and is then placed in a centrifuge for 5 to 10 minutes. This equipment spins the blood at high speed to separate the lighter plasma and platelets from the other blood cells. This isolated platelet rich plasma, or PRP, is activated by a special process to begin releasing growth factors that, once injected into the body, will initiate collagen production and other healing effects.
How Long Does It Take?
A PRP session, including microneedling, takes about an hour at our clinic. Topical anesthesia is used to minimize discomfort, and our medical staff is highly skilled in all aspects of the procedure, including specific advanced techniques, for cosmetic care you can trust. Minimal downtime is needed.
