Dermatological Cosmetic Procedures
If you’re looking for ways to rejuvenate or repair your skin that require little to no downtime or you want to take a more subtle approach to reversing the signs of aging, cosmetic procedures performed by board-certified Kelsey-Seybold dermatologists offer a relatively simple, temporary solution.
Most procedures are performed on an outpatient basis at our Kelsey-Seybold Clinic locations throughout the Houston area. Find a dermatologist near you or call our 24/7 Contact Center at 713-893-0102 for assistance in finding a dermatologist or making an appointment.
Botox® Injections
Botox injection is a popular, nonsurgical, FDA-approved treatment to correct horizontal lines across the forehead, perpendicular frown lines between the brows (known as “The Elevens”), crow’s feet, nasal squint lines, and lines around the neck. These wrinkles are caused by the repeated expressions we make. The injections block the nerve impulses of the injected muscles to temporarily paralyze the muscle movements that cause wrinkles.
Results are temporary, typically lasting three to four months. While there may be some skin redness after the procedure, there is no downtime. The procedure itself usually takes under 30 minutes
Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are another popular, nonsurgical, FDA-approved option for helping to reverse signs of aging. A wide variety of innovative filler products are available from various manufacturers, and the type that’s used depends on your particular areas of concern and your goals.
Unlike Botox that relaxes the muscle under a wrinkle, dermal fillers fill in forehead lines or creases, causing them to nearly disappear.
A dermal filler can also be used as a volumizer to contour the cheeks, plump the lips, and restore volume and fullness to the face. Fillers are a widely accepted way to allow for significant facial contouring without surgery.
Kelsey-Seybold dermatologists will evaluate you to determine the best type and amount of filler needed to address your particular areas of concern and explain the longevity of results. All of the following FDA-approved dermal fillers are available:
- Juvederm (Ultra, VOLUMA, VOLBELLA, VOLLURE)
- Restylane (Silk, Lyft, Refyne, Defyne)
- Belotero Balance
- Radiesse (formerly Radiance)
- Sculptra Aesthetic
- Bellafill (formerly Artefill)
Chemical Peels
Sun exposure, acne, or aging can leave your skin tone uneven, wrinkled, spotted, or scarred. A chemical peel is a nonsurgical procedure that uses a chemical solution to smooth the texture of your skin by removing its damaged outer layers. It addresses a variety of skin conditions, including dull/dry skin, acne, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation (brown spots), and fine lines and wrinkles. They are used most often to treat the face, but they can also be used on the neck and hands.
Chemical peels aren’t a permanent solution, but they are one of the least invasive ways to help improve the appearance of your skin. It’s a simple skincare treatment that can be performed over a lunch hour by a board-certified Kelsey-Seybold cosmetic dermatologist.
Your dermatologist will choose the strength of chemical to be used based on your skin type and desired outcome. Your skin will be cleansed and the chemical solution applied. You may feel some stinging or burning during this time. Your provider will use a cool saline compress to neutralize the chemicals.
All chemical peels require follow-up care from your dermatologist, who will advise you on steps to take to maximize your results, such as how to wash your skin and protect it from the sun.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is an in-office skin-enhancing procedure in which the top layers of the skin are gently removed, leaving the skin feeling softer and smoother. This nonsurgical skin rejuvenation treatment helps improve the appearance of scars, sun damage, age spots, skin discoloration, acne scarring, stretch marks, and clogged pores.
Microdermabrasion is performed with a stream of fine crystals that are placed on the skin’s surface and then gathered via a small vacuum, removing the damaged cells to reveal fresh, invigorated skin. Typically, several treatments are recommended, scheduled one to two weeks apart.
Kybella® for Double Chin
Are you unhappy with extra fullness beneath your chin and seeking a non-surgical solution? This fullness is actually a medical condition called submental fullness, which is commonly referred to as “double chin.” Weight gain, genetics, and diet are factors that contribute to this condition.
For adults with submental fullness, Kybella is an FDA-approved, first-of-its-kind injectable treatment that destroys fat cells under the chin to improve your profile.
Kybella is an easy and safe treatment. A series of injections are placed in the area of fullness under the neck. Multiple sessions, one month apart, may be required. Then over the course of a few weeks, the fat in that area will melt away. This is a great alternative to liposuction and doesn’t require surgery. Downtime is minimal with minor bruising or swelling possible. Since Kybella destroys fat cells, results typically last for years.
Kybella can be administered by a Kelsey-Seybold dermatologist who will evaluate if you’re a candidate and how many sessions will be required.
Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure performed by board-certified Kelsey-Seybold dermatologists to help eliminate varicose and spider veins.
It involves an injection of solution directly into the affected vein. The solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to swell and stick together. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that eventually fades from view.
Generally, spider veins respond to treatment in three to six weeks, and larger veins respond in three to four months. If the veins respond to the treatment, they usually won’t reappear. However, new veins may appear over time. If needed, you can return for more injections.
The number of veins injected during one session is dependent on the size and location of the veins and your overall medical condition. Before the procedure, it’s best to consult with your Kelsey-Seybold dermatologist to evaluate your eligibility for sclerotherapy.
Ear Lobe Repairs
Torn or split ear lobes can occur from trauma or long-term use of heavy earrings. Ear lobe repair is a simple 15- to 20-minute outpatient procedure performed by a Kelsey-Seybold dermatologist.
After removing the damaged portion of the skin, small sutures are placed to bring the skin together. Depending on the type of suture used, you may have to return for suture removal.
Explain to your dermatologist what you would like your ear lobe to look like after the repair and whether you plan to wear earrings in the future.
Skin Tag Removal
A skin tag is a small, benign skin growth that usually appears on the neck, chest, back, armpit, or eyelid. In most cases, skin tags are harmless.
Your Kelsey-Seybold dermatologist can remove a skin tag by excision with sterile scissors or scalpel, with cryosurgery (freezing it off), or with electrosurgery (burning it off with an electric current). Skin tag removal is generally not covered by insurance.
Facial Vein Laser Treatment
You may develop facial veins for a variety of reasons, including overexposure to the sun, hormone changes, trauma, or genetics. Facial veins are dilated blood vessels that are commonly found on the cheeks or around the nose.
Depending on the severity of your condition, laser treatments are a popular option for reducing and eliminating the veins. Generally, treated facial spider veins eventually fade away completely. The healing process can take anywhere from two weeks to a month.
This procedure is performed by board-certified dermatologists at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic's Tanglewood Clinic.
Vbeam Laser Treatment
The pulsed dye laser or Vbeam laser treatment is another option for patients experiencing redness from acne, spider veins, rosacea, or other vascular-related skin conditions. It delivers an intense but gentle burst of light into selected areas of the skin to target and clear blood vessels, revealing smoother-looking skin. Factors such as the skin’s age, color, and condition will be determining factors in the outcome.
This procedure is performed by board-certified dermatologists at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic's Tanglewood Clinic.
