Common Conditions
All of these common dermatological conditions are treated by board-certified Kelsey-Seybold dermatologists at our clinics throughout the Houston area.
Acne appears when pores in the skin are clogged. This clog begins with dead skin cells that don’t shed properly because the body is producing too much oil. When this happens, the dead skin cells stick together and clog the pore. Without treatment, dark spots and permanent scars can appear on the skin as acne clears.
Eczema, also called “dermatitis,” is a skin condition that can cause the skin to swell and discolor, resulting in dry, itchy, and sometimes blistery skin. People who get this skin irritation may have a family history of eczema. Decreased immune function and polluted air may also be factors.
Psoriasis is a persistent, noncontagious skin disorder that causes red or purple thickened patches and silvery scales to appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back. Psoriasis can also appear on the face, palms, and feet. The exact cause of psoriasis is unknown, but the condition tends to run in families.
Rosacea is a common skin disease that can begin with a tendency to blush or flush more easily than other people. The redness can slowly spread beyond the nose and cheeks to the forehead and chin. Even the ears, chest, and back can appear red at times.
Shingles is a virus that can be found in anyone who has had chickenpox. After chickenpox clears, the virus stays in the body. If the virus is reactivated, the result is shingles — a painful, blistering rash. Shingles is most common in older adults. Shingrix, an FDA-approved vaccine which can prevent shingles, is available to people 50 and older.
