Enlarged Prostate Gland: Symptoms and Treatment
If you’re a man and frequent trips to the bathroom during the night are becoming more disturbing to your sleep than that pesky alarm clock, you may have an enlarged prostate.
An estimated 50% of men have some evidence of enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH occurs when the prostate gland becomes so enlarged that the urethral tube is partially or almost completely narrowed, obstructing the flow of urine.
"One of the tell-tale signs of BPH is frequent nighttime urination. Men who have had a long-standing battle with BPH with a gradual increase in symptoms may develop urinary tract infections, kidney damage, and bladder stones. In severe cases, they may actually lose the ability to urinate," says Dr. Chris Chon, Chief of Urology at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.
Besides being a potential source of embarrassment, an enlarged prostate interferes with your ability to sleep, which can also have an adverse effect on health.
"Treatment is based on the severity of symptoms. Options include lifestyle changes, medication, and surgery. You can rest more easily knowing that for the majority of men, medical attention will improve their condition and help relieve symptoms," concludes Dr. Chon.
