Yoga Treatment
You might not expect a medical team to recommend an ancient eastern practice for the treatment of spinal conditions, but the Kelsey-Seybold Spine Center specialists embrace yoga as an effective, nonsurgical method to:
- Relieve pain
- Increase strength and flexibility
- Encourage relaxation
Yoga has, in recent years, proven to be a useful part of treatment for spinal conditions and other health issues for most people. Studies have shown that practicing yoga twice a week for two months increases strength, flexibility, and endurance, particularly in the neck and back.
For spine conditions ranging from degenerative disc disease to spinal stenosis, yoga promotes correct posture, vertebral alignment, and increased range of motion. The relaxing aspect of yoga also helps decrease pain and the anxiety associated with frequent pain.
As with any form of exercise, you should consult with your care team before engaging in a yoga program, especially if the source of your neck or back pain has not yet been diagnosed. Contact the Kelsey-Seybold Spine Center in Houston to meet with a spine specialist.
