Trigger Point Injections
Trigger point injections (TPI) are the injections of medications into trigger points to relax muscles and knots within muscles, which are common with spinal conditions. The knots can typically be felt as nodules or bands in the muscle and can cause localized and radiating pain.
The spine specialists at Kelsey-Seybold Spine Center may suggest trigger point injections for the temporary relief of pain associated with spinal conditions, specifically if over-the-counter medications have been ineffective. During the procedure, your doctor will examine your back for any knots in the muscles that may be causing pain.
Once the knots are identified, your doctor will use a small needle to inject medication into the trigger point or into multiple affected areas, such as the lower back and neck. Medication that may be used includes a local anesthetic painkiller or a corticosteroid. Many times, both medications will be injected to work together to reduce inflammation.
Because trigger point injection is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatment, it has a low risk of complications and provides fast relief.
