Hysteroscopic Submucosal Fibroid Resection
Using a hysteroscope, Kelsey-Seybold OB/GYN specialists remove fibroids from the inner cavity of the uterus.
Uterine fibroids are similar to uterine polyps in that they can develop on the endometrium and can cause issues such as heavy menstrual bleeding and infertility. Fibroids consist of thick muscle tissue, but unlike polyps, they are not made up endometrial tissue. They also do not become cancerous.
Many times, women do not even realize they have developed uterine fibroids and treatment is not needed, but when they are symptomatic a hysteroscopic submucosal fibroid resection may be considered.
Kelsey-Seybold Clinic offers this minimally invasive procedure when uterine fibroids become problematic and medication has not made a difference.
Minimally Invasive Procedure
Hysteroscopic submucosal fibroid resection uses a hysteroscope, which is a thin, lighted telescope-like device. It is inserted through the vagina into the uterus after dilating the cervix, and projects images of the uterus onto a monitor.
Small instruments are inserted through the hysteroscope to gain access to the fibroid(s). The procedure typically doesn’t require an overnight hospital stay. Eventually, the endometrial tissue grows over the site where the fibroid was removed and heals.
