Diagnostic Hysteroscopy
A hysteroscopy is a commonly used diagnostic tool that gives the physician a clear view of the inside of the uterus.
Diagnostic hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that diagnoses problems of the uterus, such as:
- Uterine Fibroids
- Uterine Polyps
- Abnormal menstrual bleeding
- Adhesions in the uterus
- Endometrial cancer
A hysteroscope is a thin, lighted telescope-like device. It is inserted through the vagina into the uterus via the cervix and projects images of the uterine cavity onto a screen.
Minimally Invasive Procedure
Kelsey-Seybold Clinic performs diagnostic hysteroscopies at our Ambulatory Surgical Center. Your doctor may dilate your cervix before the procedure for easier viewing. The hysteroscope is inserted into the vagina and moved through the cervix into the uterus. Typically, saline fluid may be pumped through the hysteroscope to expand the uterus.
The uterine lining is viewed through the hysteroscope. Small instruments may be passed through the hysteroscope if a biopsy or other procedure is required.
Hysteroscopy is generally safe, but as with all medical procedures there are risks, such as puncturing of the uterus or cervix, bleeding and excess fluid buildup.
