What Is Dengue Fever?
Dengue Fever is a viral disease transmitted to humans by the bite of infected mosquitoes. The mosquitoes that carry Dengue viruses are found abundantly in tropical cities, breed in and around homes, and preferentially bite humans.
The virus is characterized by sudden onset of high fever, severe headache, and joint and muscle pain. Many patients have nausea, vomiting, and a rash that appears three to five days after onset of fever and may spread from the torso to the arms, legs, and face.
Dengue Fever is a rapidly expanding disease in most tropical areas of the world. The incidence of severe disease has increased dramatically in Southeast Asia in the past 20 years.
