Male Cosmetic Surgeries Are Rising Steadily

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), male cosmetic surgery has increased by 28% since 2000. In 2017 alone, more than 1.3 million cosmetic surgeries were performed on men.

“The days of women being the only ones seeking cosmetic surgery are over,” says Yoav Kaufman, MD, FACS, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “I’m seeing more and more men in my office who are looking for ways to appear younger and healthier and boost their self-confidence.”

One reason for this shift may be that procedures are becoming more affordable. The increasingly competitive job market may also play a part. But whatever the reason, cosmetic surgery is becoming more attractive to men.

Body First, Face Second

According to research and in Dr. Kaufman’s own experience, men are more likely to seek procedures that improve the appearance of the body, as opposed to the face. In the past five years, liposuction is up 23% for men and male breast reductions are up 30%. Even tummy tucks have increased 12% for men.

“These statistics suggest that men are no longer happy settling for love handles and beer bellies. Nor are they willing to accept enlarged breasts (colloquially known as ‘man boobs’),” explains Dr. Kaufman.

Also popular are procedures that minimize the chin, specifically the fat and drooping skin that tend to develop with age. Liposuction of the neck with or without radiofrequency treatment is a popular option for eliminating a double chin.

Thanks to cosmetic surgery, men can achieve a trimmer, younger, and more sculpted body that isn’t possible with diet and exercise alone.

Face Facts

While men have been thought to “get better looking with age,” not all men are content with wrinkles and facial drooping. In fact, almost 100,000 men had filler injections in 2017, an increase of 99% since 2000.

The most popular non-invasive procedure is Botox to erase wrinkles. Kybella, an injectable treatment that helps eliminate a double chin, is a close second. These outpatient treatments can be done during a lunch hour with no downtime, making it appealing to men who can schedule around their workday.

Other procedures that are becoming more popular with men include rhinoplasty (also known as a nose job), eyelid lift surgery, and facelift.

“As the number of male cosmetic procedures increases, the stigma attached to men seeking plastic surgery decreases.
