Can Botox Improve Appearance?
Could Botox treatments reduce the frown lines between my eyebrows and those crinkly little wrinkles around my eyes?
"When administered by a knowledgeable physician, Botox injections have successfully reduced frown lines and those ‘crow’s feet’ around your eyes,” says Lana Hawayek, M.D., F.A.A.D., F.A.S.D.S., a board-certified physician specializing in Dermatology at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.
Dr. Hawayek says the cosmetic effect, though gratifying, is temporary.
“On average, the improved appearance lasts three to four months,” she says. “However, some patients have expressed satisfaction with their results for six months or longer.”
Dr. Hawayek says cosmetic Botox is a prescription medicine that is injected into the skin and absorbed into the muscles.
“It’s an office procedure I perform at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic – The Woodlands that only takes a few minutes,” she says. “Botox blocks the nerve impulses in the intended muscles. This significantly reduces muscular activity that causes lines to form – especially the ones between eyebrows.”
Dr. Hawayek says that within a few days of treatment, patients usually see a notable improvement in frown lines and wrinkles.
“Both men and women have said they felt more confident about their appearance once their deep expression lines had been reduced,” she says.
Dr. Hawayek cautions that Botox treatments are not for everyone and should not be used on patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a neurologic disease.
“For safest results, make sure your doctor knows all your health and medical conditions before requesting injections,” recommends Dr. Hawayek, who cares for patients at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic – The Woodlands.
