Our History: 1971 - 2005

1971

In 1971, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic opened its first neighborhood location on Post Oak in the Galleria area. Success resulted in other locations being opened in downtown Houston, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, and near Bush Intercontinental Airport.

1978

In 1978, Dr. James C. Hoyle joined the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Pediatrics staff. Today, Dr. Hoyle is Medical Director of Clinical Operations.

1979

Dr. William Seybold retired in 1979. Dr. Seybold was a revered general and thoracic surgeon who served as chief of staff of St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital from 1968 to 1971, as well as the chief of surgery. He served as the chief of staff of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in the early 70s.

1980-1981

In 1980 and 1981, two more distinguished physicians joined Kelsey-Seybold Clinic: Dr. Spencer R. Berthelsen, an internist, and Dr. John I. Hughes, a gastroenterologist. Dr. Berthelsen would later be named Chairman of the Board of Managers and Managing Director of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. Dr. Hughes would later serve as Chief of Gastroenterology and Associate Medical Director of Clinical Academic Affairs and Affiliations. Today, the Kelsey-Seybold Main Campus clinic is named for Dr. Berthelsen.

1986

In 1986, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic sold its 6624 Fannin building to St. Luke’s Hospital and moved into a temporary location in the Doctor’s Center. Dr. Mavis Kelsey retired, devoting himself to his family, writing more than a dozen books on art, history, genealogy, and travel, and engaging in numerous philanthropic activities.

1994 – 1998

Eight Kelsey-Seybold Fellows were inducted in recognition of their contributions to Kelsey-Seybold: Dr. James Kemper (1994), Dr. Mavis Kelsey, Dr. James Smith, and Breaux Castleman (1995), Dr. Stanton Fischer and Vicki Buxton (1996), Dr. Don Owens (1997), and Dr. Earl Beard (1998).

1999

In 1999, Kelsey-Seybold moved into its state-of-the-art Main Campus at 2727 West Holcombe Blvd. Now named the Berthelsen Main Campus after Dr. Spencer Berthelsen, the 400,000-square-foot building provides primary and specialty care in a single location. It has an outpatient surgery center, an urgent care center, on-site Kelsey Pharmacy, spacious waiting areas, expanded Radiology department with MRI, and free parking.

2002 – 2005

The following new fellows were honored: Dr. Carlos Taboada and Dr. James Boland (2002), Dr. David Mouton (2003), and Dr. James Hoyle and Enoch Freeman (2005). In 2004, Dr. William Seybold, co-founder of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, passed away at the age of 89.

2005

Kelsey-Seybold opened the 75,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Fort Bend Campus, offering access to a wide range of primary care and specialty care doctors, expanded pharmacy with drive-thru services, and enhanced diagnostic services such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerized Tomography (CT), mammography, and X-ray.
