Kelsey-Seybold 'Caring for the Caregiver' Event Provided Much-Needed Information and Support
Saturday, April 14 was an emotional but information-packed day for the more than 80 adult caregivers lovingly caring for an ill or aging family member who responded to Kelsey-Seybold’s invitation to our first “Caring for the Caregiver Event and Expo” at the Berthelsen Main Campus.
Recognizing that being a caregiver can be a hard and thankless job that can strain even the most resilient person, “Caring for the Caregiver,” brought together experts, vendors, and activities to support caregivers and highlight the importance of self-care. The event was free and open to the public.
Throughout the day-long event, caregivers had access to experts in medical, law, finance and estate planning, social workers, long-term care, hospice care, and a speaker series that had three different sessions including an expert Q&A panel. On the panel were Kelsey-Seybold’s Dr. Rupesh Nigam, Managing Physician of Supportive Medicine and Associate Medical Director of Hospitalist Services, and Dr. Shira Amdur, Supportive Medicine specialist, and Vic Mazmanian, a facilitator of Alzheimer’s support groups at Silverado, a nationally recognized provider of home care, memory care assisted living, and hospice services with 48 locations, including Houston. The panel answered audience questions on multiple caregiving topics.
Designated “zen zones” provided caregivers with a little relaxation time through chair massages, yoga, and meditation stations. The Kelsey-Seybold Wellness team provided health check screenings to make sure caregivers were addressing their own healthcare issues.
