Penile Infection

Penile infection is most often due to yeast. While yeast infections are often thought to only occur in females, men can also contract them, and, if left untreated, they can lead to painful and sometimes serious complications.

Know the Symptoms

Early symptoms of a penile yeast infection include:

• A red rash on the penis
• White, shiny patches on the penis
• Thick, white substance under the foreskin or folds of the penis
• Itching and burning of the penis

Causes and Risk Factors

A yeast infection is caused by a fungus called candida. Everyone has a small amount of candida present on their body at any given time, but moisture can lead to an overgrowth of candida, which can develop into a yeast infection. Yeast infections most often occur and spread in the genital region because it presents a moist environment.

One of the most common causes of a penile yeast infection is unprotected sexual intercourse with a woman who has a vaginal yeast infection. Poor hygiene can also make conditions favorable for a yeast infection.

Other risk factors include prolonged use of antibiotics, having diabetes, being obese, or having an impaired immune system.

Treatment Options

In most cases, topical antifungal ointments and creams are enough to clear up an infection and are available over the counter without a prescription. Some cases of penile yeast infection may require a prescription-strength medication.

If your infection has progressed, it has the potential to develop into a serious condition called balanitis (best described as inflammation of the foreskin or head of the penis). In this instance, your doctor may prescribe oral fluconazole and a hydrocortisone cream.
