Genital warts are skin growths caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that occur in the genital region and around the anus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 79 million Americans are currently infected with HPV and 14 million people become infected every year.

A small percentage of people with HPV can fight off the virus naturally and if genital warts develop, they disappear on their own. But for many people genital warts require treatment to be removed.

Minimally Invasive Procedure

Kelsey-Seybold Clinic offers two options for minimally invasive removal of genital warts that are highly effective: Electrodessication and Cryotherapy. Electrodessication is an in-office procedure that uses an electric current to destroy the genital warts. A needle-shaped electrode on a pen-like device heats the wart with a metal probe that is placed close to the skin. A scab forms over the treated area. Cryotherapy or cryosurgery is an in-office procedure that destroys genital warts by freezing them with liquid nitrogen. The tissue affected by the warts is frozen with the nitrogen and once the area is thawed, the warts have been destroyed. Depending on the size of the warts, more than one application may be needed. Mild or moderate burning may be felt during the procedure.
